I began to make this Zelda dress, because I thought it would be a great thing to sell alongside of Paul’s Link costume. This Zelda costume is not fully finished of course. It still needs all of the accessories, which we are having made by a friend of ours. I had to ponder for awhile as to what type of material to use for the main part of the Zelda dress. I have looked at other Zelda dresses online, and they seemed to be made out of satin material. I wanted something a little different, so I decided to use mercerized white cotton on the main part of the Zelda dress. This fabric is great because there is a slight sheen and thickness without the pain of puckering satin.
As you can see in these first two pictures, the white mercerized cotton gives the Zelda dress a nice look and feel.

I modified this pattern from an evening dress pattern I found at Hancock Fabrics. By modified I mean that I really just lengthened the pattern piece. J I hand-hemmed the bottom, and finished the edges. I put satin ribbon along the bust line and white bias tape along the sleeve edges.
The purple overlay was a little more difficult. I had to use a satin material for this piece, because I found it in the correct color. Next time though, I am going to find mercerized purple cotton to match the white part of the Zelda dress. I finished the edges of the purple piece with a purple bias binding along the bottom and light pink along the top. I unfortunately had run out of the purple binding. I also used boning along the inside seams, which I might not do again. I just used the boning so the satin wouldn’t pucker so much. The middle front is held closed with two hook and eyes and a gold filigree I found at Joann fabrics.
